Who is Stealing My Voice : Voice Recognition for Access Controls

Don’t steal my voice!

Scam calls and robot telemarketing calls are increasing. I have been receiving more spam robocalls lately and statistics indicate that these calls have increased by 15% in the last three months (YouMail). Some of the explanations are that my phone number may have been leaked or obtained by scammers. In 2022, 39.5 billion was lost in the US to phone scams and this number continues to grow but here is my take on what might be happening. Financial institutions have added another layer of security to protect their client accounts. This is considered Voice Authentication and offers an enhanced layer of security and protection through Voiceprint technology. So here is the hypothetical situation, if threat actors have a phone number, a corresponding name and the ability to collect a voice sample from someone answering a call or receiving a voice message, then why couldn’t they use Artificial Intelligence to imitate the account holder and verify themselves as the owner when they speak with a customer service representative to gain access to an account. Of course, this takes into consideration that there would have to be a breach of several other layers of security defense for the threat actor to be successful. So maybe it’s time to add this conversation to the increasing threats of AI with cybersecurity.
